The Government of Mexico, through the Attorney General's Office (FGR), has opened an investigation into organized crime following the explosion of a vehicle on Saturday in front of the facilities of the Community Police of the municipality of Coahuayana, Michoacán, on the Pacific coast, which left five dead and 12 injured.
In a statement, the FGR specified that, in coordination with the Security Cabinet of the Government of Mexico and the state authorities of Michoacán (west), they are conducting proceedings on the investigation initiated after the events.
«At the scene, there are 15 experts from the Federal Forensic Expert Center (CFPF) and 11 federal ministerial police, both from the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) of the FGR, specializing in field criminalistics, photography, medicine, genetics, and forensic dactyloscopy,» the agency specified.
Additionally, there are experts in telecommunications, land transport, engineering and architecture, fires and explosives, chemistry, and forensic ballistics.
The agency reiterated that after the «regrettable events,» five people lost their lives, and there are 12 injured.
On Saturday, the Attorney General's Office informed EFE that the vehicle explosion occurred around 11:40 local time (17:40 GMT), on Ignacio López Rayón Street, in front of the Community Police base.
It indicated that two of the fatal victims are men who were traveling in the wrecked vehicle, while the other three are members of the Community Police.
The Community Police is led by Héctor Zepeda Navarrete, alias Commander Teto, identified as a former member of the civilian self-defense groups that emerged in 2014 to combat the then hegemonic drug cartel known as the Knights Templar.
The Government of Michoacán has Civil Guard (State Police) groups in Coahuayana, which operate in coordination with the National Guard, the Mexican Army, and the Navy.
Michoacán has 270 kilometers of coastline on the Mexican Pacific, distributed in the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Aquila, and Coahuayana, where the Secretariat of the Navy maintains constant operations at sea, as it is a route for cocaine trafficking from South America.
Authorities have identified that inhabitants of the Michoacán coast work for drug traffickers, collecting cocaine packages at sea, which they later transport by land or on small planes to different points in Mexico or the border with the United States.
The Secretariat of the Navy has identified that there is a strong confrontation on the coast of Michoacán between the Community Police of Aquila and Coahuayana and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) for control of drug trafficking routes.
Since November 10, Mexico has reinforced security in Michoacán following the murder of Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, who was attacked during a public event on the Day of the Dead.
